VSA - Community Artwork
The new Mass Transportation Authority "Friends" sculpture was unveiled on Thursday, Nov. 5, 2015. Located at the Flushing MTA Your Ride Center, 1425 E. Pierson Road, it is dedicated to individuals with disabilities.
This bronze sculpture was created, along with artwork inside the building, by VSA Michigan-Genesee County artists and other area residents and MTA passengers with and without disabilities.
Many thanks to Fine Arts Sculpture Centre, Bossman Construction Co., Rick Mansour of Great American Auto Sales, and Back to the Bricks sculptor Joe Rundell for his guidance on this incredible journey!
The McLaren Pulmonary Rehab Center Mural, entitled “Pause, Breathe, Smile”, is a mixed media creation of paint, glass mosaic, and fused glass. VSAMI-GC collaborated with The Real Art Team, a youth group from Richfield Church of the Nazarene, who brought their experience in painting murals, under the direction of Wendy Brimley, a local artist.Located on Beecher Road in Flint, the 5-panel piece was completed in June 2015. During the colder months, the panels are mounted indoors, thanks to the clever work of carpenter Gary Gerstheimer.
The two organizations received a Share Art grant from the Ruth Mott Foundation through the Greater Flint Arts Council. Out of 87 projects that requested funding this year, only 14 were awarded Share Art grants.
The collaboration between the Real Art Team and VSA brought an opportunity for two past recipients of the Priority Children’s Annual Children’s Champion Awards to work together. It is an acknowledgement of the vital role that the arts play in the lives and education of not only our youth with disabilities, but in everyone’s lives.
"The Art of Giving" Tile Mural was made possible through the generosity of the specialty pharmacy Diplomat, Inc. and was truly a collaborative effort. Representing the five areas on which the American Red Cross focuses, it was created from drawings by artists from Hurley Childrens Hospital's Pediatric Oncology Unit and their families, along with young adults from the Genesee ISD Transition Center's Business Arts Class. These individuals also participated in the glazing of tiles, along with Red Cross volunteers and donors and Diplomat's Beecher Road staff in Flint. VSA Michigan-Genesee County volunteers coordinated the project, including putting together and transferring the design, overglazing, and firing of tiles. Castles Brothers Construction erected the backing and frame and Richard L. Slemp of the Red Cross mounted the tiles.

Our first actual commission came from Diplomat (then Specialty Pharmacy) in November of 2012. "While this project was a year in the making, the efforts of these students now becomes a permanent, forever piece of art for Diplomat staff and visitors," said Diplomat CEO Phil Hagerman. "They did an exceptional job of relaying the history of Flint in a unique and vivid way, in addition to tracing Diplomat's roots from the
The Bishop International Airport Tile Mural was the first to take place in a public venue. Over 300 GISD student artists submitted artwork, glazed tiles, and celebrated the opening of it next to the escalator on May 20th, 2010. Families, friends, and local dignitaries joined in the celebration and it was a thrilling surprise for everyone when the piece was actually unveiled!
Starting in the Genesee Intermediate School District's buildings, VSAMI-GC has created over a dozen large (mostly) tile murals; the exceptions are Diego Rivera-related fresco at the Elmer Knopf Learning Center and a terra cotta handprint tree at Marion Crouse Instructional Center.
